Radcliffe Camera is a large circular building with a lofty dome built by James Gibbs in 1737 with money bequeathed by John Radcliffe. It was designed to house a library endowed by Radcliffe.
The building is the earliest example in England of a circular library, one of the progeny of the antique circular temple. It is built in three main stages externally and two stories internally, the upper one containing a gallery.
